Water Heater Ignitor Will Not Spark

When trying to light the heater be sure to put the gas valve on the water heater in the pilot position and hold down on the pilot button.

How long has this been going on. You may have to dim the room lights to see the spark. To determine if the igniter is defective first make sure the igniter is getting voltage. The spark is small and the igniter is deep inside the base of the water heater.

Some water heaters use an igniter to ignite the gas. When i press the ignitor with pilot depressed i get no sparks after about forty tries in a dark room. Make sure the wire is connected at the bottom of the push button that makes the igniter spark. Is age a probable factor.

If sparking occurs but the valve does not open check the following. If you still can t see a spark turn the gas control knob off turn the gas supply valve off and click on more help below. The direct spark ignition water heater must have not only the correct gas pressure but a dc voltage range with power supplied to ignitor sparking should occur and the gas valve should open simultaneously. The heater is in good condition good water quality and no sign of scale.
